The friendliest comment I can make on the latest film version of [Macbeth] is this: It's really a movie. But it's a bad, messed-up movie for no reason. It replaces Shakespeare's language and dramatic logic with images and emotions, and relegates characterization to by-products, but the wind and rain in the Scottish Highlands and the witches failed to strengthen the fate of the environment and times. The failure of the adaptation is ultimately due to a lack of true overall thinking.
