In 2016, director Morgan Neville began the official production of the documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor?". Before filming, Morgan Neville also visited the Fred Rogers Center in Pittsburgh, where he spent a day browsing the materials to better understand where the story was going. Morgan Neville and Fred Rogers' wife Joanne had a lengthy discussion. Morgan Neville didn't want to make the project a Fred Rogers biopic, he was going to make a film about Fred Rogers' thoughts. Morgan Neville's idea was supported by Joanne, who provided him with plenty of material about Fred Rogers   .
