The film reflects the wild history of the collapse of the French colonial empire in the 1960s that had a huge impact on the French nation. Obviously, the film touched the faint emotions in the bones of the French, so it won four Caesars awards in the second year after it was released. The youth story of "Les roseaux sauvages" is sad but not cruel, and the emotions are complex but not unusual. In other words, "youth" and "homosexuality" are just the perspective and foothold set by Tessine. His true intention is Use young people with different identities to build a monument for the national character of France. As far as "Les roseaux sauvages" is concerned, only French people who have experienced the sixties can truly understand what Tessine is talking about. Of course, they will not refuse to relive the sadness and tranquility of youth.
The title "Les roseaux sauvages" comes from La Fontaine's famous fable "The Oak and the Reed", and there is even a French lesson in the film. Reed is such a plant that looks fragile but is extremely tough. Just like these adolescent young people, even in the era of great social change, even if their sexual orientation is vague and chaotic, they still experience the joy and suffering of growth in the youth that is invaded by politics and sex. In any case, that is their brilliant youth that cannot be replaced in their entire lives.
