The 450 soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division of the US Army, under blind command, landed in the central area where the North Vietnamese army was assembled without knowing and unprepared. The North Vietnamese side had already deployed more than 2,000 troops around the landing site, and the soldiers of the First Battalion had to face nearly five times their own enemy. Although they have strong long-range and aerial fire support behind them, after all, there is a huge disparity between the few and the officers and soldiers of the first battalion have to start an extremely heavy battle for survival.
Fortunately, the North Vietnamese troops had limited intelligence and were very cautious in commanding. They did not seize the opportunity to take advantage of the emptiness and destroy the entire camp in one fell swoop. After two days of fighting with more than 100 casualties, the first battalion was finally able to leave the battlefield and return to the base with the second battalion that came to rescue the siege. However, on the way, due to the lack of experience of the second battalion commander, he ordered the column that had been dragged to 500 yards in the jungle to stop advancing just to interrogate two prisoners of war. It hit the new force of North Vietnam with its weak firepower, and a battalion was almost wiped out in the fierce battle.

Joseph Galloway: Thank you, sir. You too.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: I'll never forgive myself.

    Joseph Galloway: For what, sir?

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: That my men... That my men died and I didn't.

Joseph Galloway: Sir, I don't... I don't know how to tell this story.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: Well, you got to, Joe. You tell the American people what these men did here. You tell 'em how my troopers died.

    Joseph Galloway: Yes, sir.

  • Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: - Sent us another bunch of officers.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: - Uh-huh

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Real green.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: Gotta train 'em up. Makes me think I'm starting a new unit.

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: They sent new rifles too

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: The M-16. That's supposed to be a pretty good weapon.

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Lots of plastic. Feels like a BB gun to me. Believe I'll stick with my pistol.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: You think we're gonna get close enough to the enemy to use that?

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: What do you think, sir?
