The movie is based on Benjamin Mill’s memoir novel of the same name. My family bought the zoo: A true story that changed a young family forever, a tattered zoo and 200 animals (We Bought a Zoo: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, A Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Changed Their Lives Forever), the novel describes the story of him and his family saving money and putting together money to buy the Dartmoor Animal Park in England. When this zoo was purchased in Mir, it was on the verge of bankruptcy, and the more than 200 animals in the zoo were not well taken care of. The zoo was bought by the Ellis Doyle family in 1948 and opened to the public in 1968. However, due to poor management and debt crisis and other incidents, the Doyle family had to close the zoo on April 23, 2006. In August 2006, the Mill family bought the zoo and its animals for 1.1 million pounds. After raising funds and refurbishing the zoo, it reopened to the public in July 2007.
