In London in the 1950s, the air was still cold and humid, and people were still conservative. In front of family and friends, Vera Drakeis just a kind and selfless woman who is willing toa lot of energy to caring for sick neighbors and elderly mothers, feeding stray animals, and taking care of the whole family. She and her husband Stanlive with their two grown-up children, Sid and Issel, and their lives are not rich but happy and close. Vera cleans the room for others, Stan works as a mechanic in his brother's garage, Sed cuts clothes, and Ethel tests light bulbs in a factory—a typical family of ordinary workers.
But Vera also has an unknown side. She also has a secret job—helping young girls perform abortions to end pregnancy that they don’t want to continue. At that time, artificial abortion was not legal. Although it could be done privately through a doctor, the daughter of the wealthy family of Vera's servant was raped to get pregnant. When the private doctor learned that she did not want to tell her parents, she asked her for it. A huge sum of 150 pounds. So although assisting in abortion is a crime, Vera simply believes that this is just her way to help helpless girls.
One day, a girl that Vera had helped suffered from complications and nearly died. The hospital reported the incident to the police. After questioning the girl's mother and obtaining some evidence, the police followed the vine and focused the investigation on Vera.
