This film tells the story of a widow and lonely old man, Humberto D, who has worked in the public construction sector in Italy for more than 30 years. However, after retirement, he only has 18,000 lire pension to support his living. The beginning was a parade of retired workers, and Humberto D was also among them. He was holding a puppy named Frank, who was shrunken in the crowd and seemed so insignificant.
The parade was doomed to fail. The crowd was dispersed by the police who came to maintain order. Umberto D hurriedly fled the scene with Frank. He returned to the hut he had rented, but that was not his paradise either. The demanding landlady always intimidates him to pay the rent in arrears and tries her best to drive Wintor D away. He had no choice but to sell his beloved book, but only in exchange for 2,400 lire. Afterwards, he had a high fever and had not eaten a meal for a month, so he had to be admitted to a public hospital. For him, the hospital is a good place. At least he doesn't have to worry about food and housing, and he doesn't have to endure the hostess's acrimonious face. But after all, the hospital was a place to take shelter, and Umberto D was desperate after being discharged from the hospital. After asking his friends for help, he had no choice but to embark on a life of begging along the street. At first, Umberto D, the self-respectful messenger, was reluctant to beg personally. When others agreed to give favors, he tremblingly withdrew his begging hand and pretended to comb his hair. Then he suddenly wanted to make little Frank begging with his hat in his mouth, but he failed to beg because he met an acquaintance. Faced with the oppression of life, the elderly Umberto D thought of committing suicide, but before committing suicide, he gave the dog to others to help take care of him, and soon the dog found him by himself.

Aside from Desica's usual sense of morality, there's some Tati-esque comedy, and the maid-making coffee passage is a kind of Playtime. The money flows in the hands of people, no longer pointing to any commodity (a thrown glass), but back to the transmission itself. Perhaps the ancestor of Pickpocket and Money. The last group of children passed sideways, obscuring the old man and the dog, a sad wipe.

  • Umberto Domenico Ferrari: During the war she called me Grandpa. I gave her some meat from time to time. After the war she went crazy. She even hates my dog. If you saw my dog, you'd know it's impossible to hate him.
