The protagonist is 73-year-old Alvin Strett. Alvin is too old to be beautiful. He was so blind that he could no longer drive, and he had to rely on two crutches to walk. Alvin lives with his daughter Rosewho is mentally impaired,peaceful and simple life.leisure way is not to watch TV, but to watch the storm and lightning together. Later, Alvin received a call and learned that his brother Lylehad suffered a stroke. The two brothers hadn't spoken for ten years due to their disagreement. Alvin felt it was time to see him and resolve the conflict between the two. Alvin planned to drive the old lawn mower made in 1966, with only $50 and a pile of cigars on him, and set off from Iowa to Wisconsin. During the journey, Alvin met all kinds of people, including a pregnant girl who ran away from home, a veteran of World War II, and a lonely priest.
