In 1947, a little British girl born in India, Mary Renrox, was orphaned overnight after the death of her parents. She was sent from India to Uncle Colinmanor life. There, the spoiled, angry girl discovers that this is a family that is seriously out of balance: Craven is heartbroken and devastated, the housekeeper Mrs. Medlocknonchalant, and there are other people from afar at night.
