The film is based on the immigrant life of the Puritans who believed in Calvinism during the colonial period of New England, focusing on the suffering of the people under the harsh regime at that time. Religion has carved a deep imprint on people's thoughts and lives, so that social morality is mediocre and low, and people dare not resist in the face of wanton evil forces. The destruction of the soul and the suppression of human nature are accentuated by the heroine's firm resistance, and the two contrast with each other. In order to create a strong religious atmosphere, the director has strict requirements on props, sets and costumes, and the actors' performances are even more measured and refined. The use of light and shadow and the handling of light and shade are the unique artistic skills of this film. The film uses dark tones, mainly cool colors, creating a heavy and depressing atmosphere. Even if the sky is clear, it is also processed with back light, creating a monotonous and gray life atmosphere, which highlights the theme of the film.
