The three soldiers return to America in the 1920s after World War I. Hurt becomes a lawyer, Harry becomes a bootlegger, and Eddie plans to become a taxi driver. Eddie and Smith also joined the bootlegging business and became partners with Harry due to the ease of making money during Prohibition, but Eddie was disgusted by the cruelty of the business, and he tried the stock business. The economic depression of 1929 bankrupted him. Eddie heard that Harry wanted to murder his accomplice Hart, because Hart was actually a law enforcement officer, Eddie killed Harry but was killed by the gunman himself.
