The original title of the film was "Passion", but in October 2003, Miramax was shooting a film of the same name. Mel Gibson then changed the title to "The Passion of the Christ".
Hollywood has always taken a mocking attitude towards religion, and even sneered at movies about religion. When Mel Gibson announced his plan to shoot a movie about the crucifixion, he was immediately criticized and hindered by various forces.
Mel Gibson is the most conservative actor and the most devout director. He believes in Catholicism, he has acted in more than 40 influential films, and he leads a conservative life. As far as directing films is concerned, what he dedicated is all sincerity. He likes to photograph the essence of the crucifixion and is completely loyal to history.
In 1988, great director Martin Scorsese launched "The Last Temptation of Christ". The film caused great controversy after its release because of its bold touch on Catholic doctrine. The final film's box office revenue was only 8.4 million U.S. dollars. The similar theme "The Passion of the Christ" encountered a lot of difficulty when it was released, and no big company was willing to take the risk of taking this hot potato. In the end, it was taken over by New Market Pictures.
