After the French national heroine Joan of Arcwas betrayed and fell into the hands of the Burgundian rebels, the Catholic Church closely controlled by the English authorities held a trial of Joan in Rouen, France, accusing her of a heresy and a witch . In court, the judge continued to torture her mentally and physically with faith issues. The simple answer of Joan, a girl who has never read but was inspired by God, embarrassed her interrogator. They tried to force her to repent with intimidation, tricked her into saying false statements about God and the Catholic creed, and forced Jean to withdraw her claim that she was the daughter of God. Joan was tortured and subjected to bloodletting under the pretext of reducing her fever. The judge took out a forged letter from King Charles. The letter asked Jean to trust the priests, but they were actually her enemies. Joan once gave up her ideas in order to avoid the death penalty. However, when she saw the grass crown on the cell, she cheered up again and insisted that she was a messenger sent by God, which led to her sentence of death by fire. Finally, Joan of Arc was taken to Rouen city square, tied to the stake and burned alive dead  .

Passion is a wonderful wording, which means both "passion" and "pain" in French, which is in line with the image of Joan of Arc. Dreyer's shock through various close-ups—in my limited viewing capacity—is far more shocking than Bergman's Persona. When it comes to the degree of touching, there is still no one to beat it.

3.5. This kind of film is too rarely watched, and it is difficult to watch it. I finally finished watching it on and off today. The soundtrack and shots of this film, especially the part of the execution at the stake, are very shocking. Joan of Arc died of injustice, and the people protested. Almost every scene was shrouded in thick smoke.

The Passion of Joan of Arc quotes

  • Jeanne d'Arc: I have never wronged anyone.

  • Old man: You have burned a saint!
