The story of the film is set in the fictional land of Oakton in the late 1950s, and there are two main lines in the story, running at the same time. One main line is The Nut Job of animals for winter food, and the other is the robbery of the town's bank by vicious criminals.
Surly the squirrel is a lone ranger in the animal park who only works with his good friend Buddy the mouse to store food. This winter, the small animals in the forest park were running out of food. The pet bird of the chief raccoon and Surly found the nut cart parked in front of the bank at the same time. The raccoon sent the animal hero Grayson and the beautiful squirrel Andie to steal the nuts, but they were caught by the squirrel. Surly screwed up, not only was the nut cart destroyed, but even the animals' stored food was consumed by the fire. Raccoon orders Surly to be expelled. Meanwhile, the raccoon sends Andie and Grayson out of the park to find food to keep the animals safe for the winter.
The exiled Surly and Buddy found a nut shop by accident, so they decided to rob the nut shop. Unexpectedly, the owner of the nut shop was King who had just been released from prison. He and his men, Fingers, Lucky, plan to use the nut store as a barrier to steal the bank's cash.
Surly and Buddy sneak into the nut shop, only to find that Fingers has a ferocious Shar Pei. Although Surly and Buddy are extra careful, they are still found by the Shar Pei. During Surly's escape, he finds that the Shar Pei Precious is very afraid of the dog in the hands of Fingers. Whistle, Surly decides to get the whistle, but the whistle is snatched by Andie who comes out looking for food. In desperation, Surly decided to bring Andy with The Nut Job and reached an agreement of five or five points.
Unexpectedly, raccoon had other plans. In order to consolidate his leadership among animals, raccoon decided to eradicate Surly. He sent spy moles to sabotage Surly and Andie's theft plan, and blamed Surly for killing his brother. Surly had trouble with Andie and Buddy. After the deadlock, decided to go it alone.
On the night King decides to rob the bank, the animals are betrayed by the raccoon, Surly jumps into the car with the bomb in order to rescue Andie, and finally Surly falls into the waterfall with the raccoon. Andie returned to the zoo with a full load of nuts.
