The film's director, Australian Peter Weir, is known for his "Garipo's", "A Dangerous Year" and "The Witness". The film was written by Paul Schrader, who wrote "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull." This film shows the insignificance in the confrontation between man and society and nature; but the persistence of the protagonist also shows the value of man. Harrison Ford's performance is amazing, his character is clear, and he brings out the best and the worst in his character. This mysterious and charismatic character is rare in American cinema.
