In 1976, Lang Howard and John Wayne co-starred in the Western film "The Sharpshooter" was nominated for the Golden Globe Award, which made him always have a "Western Plot" in mind. Sometimes Lang Howard will receive some western scripts from others, but usually throw them away after turning a few pages, because the stories are not new. However, when watching the script of the film, Lang Howard did not feel familiar at all. He believed that it was very original and did not have the drawbacks of plagiarizing the old-fashioned plots of classic Western films.
As the father of three daughters, Howard is very interested in the fate of three female characters in the midwestern setting of the film. Before shooting the film, Howard had never made a movie that really explored female characters, so he was deeply attracted by the female themes in the story.
