On the eve of the imminent demise of Nazi Germany, Maria and Hermann went to the city hall to register their marriage. A bomb exploded near the city hall, knocking the portrait of Hitler to the ground. The next day, Herman went to the front. After Germany was defeated, women went to the railway station to pick up their relatives and return home. Someone told Maria of Herman's death. In order to make a living, Maria worked as a waitress in a bar of the American occupation army, and met Bill, a black American military officer. After the two moved in together, Bill proposed to Maria, but Maria refused. After Maria became pregnant, she planned to name the child Herman in honor of her dead husband. At this time, Herman, who was released from the prisoner of war camp and went home, suddenly broke into the door and fought with Bill. The thin Herman couldn't beat the tall Bill, so Maria took the bottle and smashed Bill on the head. After Bill was killed, Herman confessed in court that he was the murderer who killed Bill, and was jailed for it.
After Maria became an abortion, she met the entrepreneur Oswald. After that, she became Oswald's private secretary. While helping Oswald run the textile mill, Maria was surprisingly capable. Later, Maria became Oswald's lover. Oswald gave Maria a rich material life. But all this can't make up for the emptiness of her heart, because her heart is still tied to her legal and sacred marriage with Herman. Once, Oswald visited Herman in prison. The two reached an agreement: Herman "gives" his wife to Oswald, and Oswald bailed Herman out of prison. After Herman was released from prison, he told Maria that he would look for her when he had achieved something. Three years later, Oswald died of a heart attack, and Herman returned from abroad with a fortune. As the two reveled in the joy of meeting, Oswald's lawyer came to announce his will. Oswald gave half of his fortune to Maria and the other half to Herman as the price for his "wife". Maria felt that her sacred marriage had been betrayed, and a heavy sense of loss came to her heart   .

Fassbender, 1979. I really don't like this movie. I don't know what to say, is it a woman in war? Is it a woman in love? Or a woman in marriage? There's nothing good about it, it's really indifferent.

What interests me the most about this film is Fassbender's sound design for the final part: the World Cup football commentary is used throughout the final part, and the narrator's hysterical roar seems to be venting the director's anger. Other parts are quite satisfactory, and the camera design and scheduling are still accurate. The explanation of the dilapidated and chaotic social environment in Germany after the war mainly relies on the presentation of several scenes to bring out the big ones: the train station where the missing people are found is the director's emphasis. Yes, the overall black tone is also Fassbender's consistent style.

The Marriage of Maria Braun quotes

  • [Maria commenting on her new hairdo]

Maria Braun: I look like a poodle.

Betti Klenze: You think so? It's the latest thing.

Maria Braun: I'll bet the Americans are crazy about poodles.

  • Peddler: I just happen to have a beautiful edition of Kleist's works on hand.

Maria Braun: Books burn too fast. They don't give any heat.

Peddler: That's one way of looking at it.

    Maria Braun: It's my way.

Peddler: Right now it's probably the right way.
