The characters in "The Man in the Iron Mask" come from the novel "D'Artagnan Trilogy" compiled by the French writer Alexandre Dumas, and some plots in the film are more similar to those of Viscount Bragelona. The story of the film is adapted from the novel "The Man in the Iron Mask" of the same name written by the French writer Alexandre Dura. This novel is also the sequel to Dumas' "The Three Musketeers".
In 1997, Lindsay Durant, the owner of MGM Studios, was inspired by "Brave Heart" and other historical themes, and pulled out the 1929 version of "The Man in the Iron Mask" from the film library of its subsidiary United American Company. Decided to make a costume movie based on this movie. The investor invited Randall Wallace, the screenwriter of "Brave Heart", to be the director of the film. In April 1997, Randall Wallace led the crew to the Aparon Studios outside Paris to shoot the film.
