At the time of filming, George Raft refused to appear in the film because of contempt for the film.
The film's dialogue and scenes are exactly the same as the original.
Two "Malta Eagle" statues were used in the film, because the first one was broken by Humphrey Bogart. In the film museum of Warner Bros., you can see the "Malta Eagle" in the movie. The damage to the tail was done by Bogart more than 60 years ago.
The automatic revolver that Spade mentioned in the film does exist. It is a Webley-Fosbery revolver, which can only be found in the hands of collectors.
There is a 7-minute long shot in the film, which was rehearsed for two days.
The 60-year-old Sydney Greenstreet weighed 357 pounds, and the crew had to make a special costume for this big guy.
The climax of the film is 20 minutes long, and it took a week to complete the filming.
