In the autumn of 1977, Ms. Shepherd, a wandering old lady with a weird personality, came to a middle-class community in the East End of London. She drove an unbreakable classic van, eating, drinking, and sleeping, all in the car. Every family in the community leads a decent life, and the old lady is like a smelly old hen, breaking into the backyard of the peacocks murderously. Every family should show kindness and compassion as much as possible, especially in front of children, teach them to be kind to others and to be sympathetic to the poor.
The old lady has a stinky and hard temper, she doesn't appreciate everything, and she can't show her gratitude at all. The smile of every family froze on their faces and fled. Only the playwright Alan Bennett accepted the presence of Ms. Sheppard and allowed her to occupy her own driveway to park. Since then, this "mobile garbage station" has lived on the road in the community for 15 years. Deep down in every neighbor's heart, he hoped that she would go quickly, but also had to continue to do good deeds amiably.

The Lady in the Van quotes

  • Alan Bennett: [narrating] It's like a fairy story, a parable, in which the guilty is gulled into devising a sentence for someone innocent. Only to find it is their own doom they have pronounced.

  • Jehovah's Witnesses: [at the front door] Good afternoon. Does Jesus Christ dwell in this house?

Alan Bennett: No. Try the van...
