The costume design of the film is directed by Meyers C. Rubio, trying to present the main idea of fusion of Chinese and Western to show Chinese craftsmanship, and use ancient Chinese knitting techniques to show the beauty of clothing of that era. From soldiers' armors, cloaks to helmets, the design concept makes traditional Chinese clothing more dynamic. In addition to the integration of Chinese and Western elements, the use of color is also a link that Director Zhang Yimou attaches great importance to. Zhang Yimou let the five armies wear different colors of armor, and each starring costume has made a unique design according to his own personality characteristics. The biggest challenge in the film's costume design is to create six kinds of army costumes from scratch. The designer meticulously carves the shape of each animal on the clothing of each general. The most complicated set of clothing requires 18 hands to operate at the same time to be put on. 90% of the clothing team are Chinese.
