The Grandmaster Creative background

Wong Kar-wai accidentally saw a video taken 3 days before Yip Man passed away. A pause in Yip Man's punching aroused Wong Kar-wai's interest in martial arts. After learning about many martial arts schools, Wong Kar-wai wanted to reproduce the ecology of martial arts through the preparation of "The Grandmaster". In order to obtain more historical information, he spent three years visiting more than 100 folk kung fu masters from various schools across the country, including Wing Chun, Xingyi, Tai Chi and other well-known types of martial arts, as well as Bagua, Baji, and Tong. Back to the little-known but not to be underestimated the martial arts school. Some masters were moved by the director's sincerity, broke the restrictions of sect, and told them all the special skills they had reserved for their apprentices. During the visit, there were other touching stories that inspired Wong Kar-wai a lot and injected various essences into the movie.
The original intention of Wong Kar-wai's "The Grandmaster" started with "Wing Chun" and "Yip Man". During his journey of "The Grandmaster's Road", Wong Kar-wai's imagination of this movie was obtained by visiting various masters. It is no longer limited to the "Wing Chun" school, but from "a street" to "an era". "The Grandmaster" not only talks about Yip Man, but also includes all the masters of various schools in China who are contemporary with Yip Man in the mirror to perform a panoramic master scan.
Wong Kar-wai's "Road to the Grandmaster" started in Hong Kong and was exhibited in the Mainland, spanning north and south, and was seen in "The Grandmaster". Under the main context of the "Four Big Boxing Schools", through the design of dozens of martial artists' group portraits, tens of thousands of details of the times are displayed, trying to restore the scenery and details of the times, and reproduce the group images and characters of the times.

I still don't like this kind of "in the cloud" lines, especially in the absence of background foreshadowing, the necessity is very questionable. The photography is beautiful, but the weighted connection between the several threads lacks a strong emotional bond. There is a desire for self-breakthrough, but no substantial progress has been achieved, far less than "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". It's very disappointing to shoot this result with the luxury of money and time that other directors don't have.

In the main drama, completely ignore the drama and the characters, and abuse the slow-motion slow-shutter photography and double shadow (until the ending emotional drama such techniques are rationalized), and indulge in the personal sentiment outside the free drama. The two rain scenes are handled exactly the same. The full-screen close-up has proved that he does not care about the environment and the world of the characters at all, but only self-pity for the shadows. What era was taken here, only "self" was taken from beginning to end

The Grandmaster quotes

  • Gong Er: My father would always say, people who practice martial arts go through three stages: seeing yourself, seeing the world, seeing all living beings.

  • Gong Er: Remember when I told you that there is nothing to regret in life? It's all bullshit. If life had no regrets it would be really boring.
