Brazil is a country paralyzed by a military dictatorship. In 1985, Brazil established a democratic foundation. In 2002, it elected Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a very popular steel worker who turned into a political activist. Under his leadership, 20 million Brazilians were lifted out of poverty, and Brazil gained international fame. In 2010, Lula passed the presidential baton to his successor, a female guerrilla named Dilma Rousseff.
However, behind their sunny heritage, populist anger and institutional corruption spread to mainstream society, most of which were instigated by a party judge who provided sensational corruption reports to the news media. The report is aimed at Lula, Dilma, and others who refuse to please powerful politicians and special interest groups. The Edge of Democracy follows Brazil’s embattled leaders who are fighting a scandal caused by their country’s fascist history, which was instigated by an angry and ideologically divided country   .

I have said many times that my friends have been refusing to watch this movie with me. After watching it, I discussed with him why. He said that many Brazilians were disgusted with this documentary, because the film made Brazilians seem like idiots. The Social Democratic Workers Party PT collapsed because their affairs were rotten, they distributed welfare to the bottom and the top was seriously corrupt, the censorship system was strict (whatsapp was banned at the time), and the economic development policy was unsustainable (money was used to bribe and where is corruption? There are also social construction), and even the problems accumulated to a certain extent, and the economic crisis immediately collapsed. Congress voted twice on Dilma's impeachment case, the second time her polling approval rating was only 7%. As the director said, the full collapse of PT was of course helped by hostile political forces, but it was also the direction of public opinion. As for Bolsonaro, my friend said that he has no hope (he said so), anyway, who is not greedy (crying in the air).

Overall, I feel I am watching very filthy things... This doc is all about access. Because the director of access can shoot these materials, but the arrangement of the materials is more confusing; and there are too many received ideas here, the film has become Conduit of some great ideological power... the author's own power is weak. Maybe the era of great minds making great documentaries is really gone.

The Edge of Democracy quotes

  • Self - Ex-Presidente: It's no use trying to stop me from travelling around this country, because there are millions of Lulas, Boulos, Manuelas, and Dilma Rousseffs to do it for me. There's no use in trying to stop my ideas. They're already in the air, and you can't imprison them! There's no point in trying to stop my dreams, because when I stop dreaming, I'll be dreaming through your minds and dreams! There's no point in thinking everything's going to stop the day Lula has a heart attack. That's nonsense! Because my heart will be beating through yours, and there are millions of hearts! The powerful can kill one, two, or 100 roses. But they'll never stop the arrival of spring, and our fight is in search of spring!

  • Petra Costa: The fact that there is no evidence that he's the owner of the apartment is considered proof of his attempt to hide it, and this proof is used as evidence that he's the mastermind of the scheme.
