"El Espinazo del Diablo" is the same as "Pan's Labyrinth". It is not ghosts that make people feel scared, but adults who are annihilated by desire and greed. And a child in despair is like a pure heart at risk, either killed or abandoned. However, the color of "El Espinazo del Diablo" is more single than that of "Pan's Labyrinth". There is no hidden and fantasy labyrinth world. It is like a corner temporarily forgotten in the world during the war. Left-wing orphans, intellectuals, It seems that all the left-wing revolutionaries can live in seclusion here. However, war is everywhere, it is an age of being with ghosts.
At the same time, "El Espinazo del Diablo" is poetic and realistic. It is not magical like "Pan's Labyrinth"; although it recognizes the existence of ghosts, it does not allow ghosts to run on the ground, but hides in it. The underwater place is an allegory of the evil of human nature, with dull sighs from time to time, just like those ghosts who have died with grievances. There are also poems read by Casares for the dean, symbolizing the purity of love.
