"The Cider House Rules" is adapted from the novel of the same name published by American writer John Owen in 1985. However, in order to make the novel into a movie, Owen has gone through 13 years of hard work. The first to work with Irving to adapt the screenplay was director Philip Bosas. Shortly after the novel was published, the screenplay gradually took shape in Paul Newman's living room, and Dale Lindo was also involved. While everyone was complacent, Bossas accidentally contracted a terminal illness, and the filming plan was forced to stop. His death almost collapsed the crew. For a long time, it was thought that "The Cider House Rules" had been out of the big screen.
But "The Cider House Rules" has no shortage of supporters, and producer Richard N. Gladstein hopes to make the novel into a movie. He met with Owen, and the two set out to find a director, and finally targeted Lasse Hallström, who has directed "The Years of Dog Face" and "Different Sky". Irving removed too many characters and minor plots, shortened the time span, and added new content   .

The Cider House Rules quotes

  • Fuzzy: Is your father dead?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: Cirrhosis. It's a disease of the liver.

Fuzzy: What, a liver killed him?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: No, alcohol killed him. He drank himself to death.

Fuzzy: But did you know him?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: Barely. But it hardly mattered that I knew him.

Fuzzy: Did you know your mother better?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: Mm-hmm. She's dead now too. She was a nanny.

    Fuzzy: What's a nanny do?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: She looks after other people's children.

Fuzzy: Did she grow up around here?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: No. She was an immigrant.

    Fuzzy: What's an immigrant?

Dr. Wilbur Larch: Someone not from Maine.

  • Homer Wells: I was wondering if you could give me a ride.

Wally Worthington: Sure. I'd be glad to. A ride where?

    Homer Wells: Where you going?

Wally Worthington: We're heading back to Cape Kenneth.

Homer Wells: Cape Kenneth? That sounds fine.
