Both Lorraine and Mike are facing divorce. At this time, the news of the death of their mother Francesca brought them back to the village where they lived in childhood. In a long letter left by their mother, they learned a secret of a relationship deeply buried in their mother's heart. One day in 1965, the whole family went to the market. Francesca stayed at home alone. Photographer Robert Kincaid’s car stopped in front of the door. He asked her where the Madison Bridge was. Francesca got into the car and took him to the bridge.
Robert was busy observing the shape, choosing the angle, and finally picked a handful of wild chrysanthemums and gave it to Francesca as a thank you. Francesca felt a special taste in his heart, so he invited him to drink iced tea. The two talked to each other about their marriage and family: Robert divorced from his ex-wife, and Francesca lived a monotonous and quiet country life with her husband, son and daughter. As night fell, Francesca had a feeling of attachment after sending off Robert. She finally made up her mind to drive to Rosemant Bridge and stapled a note to the end of the bridge.
The next day, Robert, who had been working all day, finally found the note. He accepted Francesca's invitation, and the two worked together by the bridge, taking pictures. Night fell again, and the two returned to Francesca's home for dinner. In the soft music and dance, the two could not help embracing and dancing together, and finally walked into the bedroom together. The two stayed together for the next two days. However, Francesca was unwilling to abandon the family, and the two broke up painfully. After Robert left, Francesca collected all his works.
In March 1982, she learned of Robert's death and received his necklace and bracelet, as well as the note booked on the bridge that year. She put them in a wooden box and looked through them once a year on her birthday. Francesca passed away in 1989. In her will, she asked her children to scatter her ashes on the banks of the Madison Bridge. Both Caroline and Mike were moved by their mother's emotional story and their sense of responsibility to the family. They sympathized and understood their mother. At the same time, they also began to cherish the current family and gave up the hasty divorce plan
