The film is adapted from Liang Yusheng's original martial arts novel of the same name. Gao Zhisen was optimistic about the original book "Bride with White Hair" and persuaded director Ronny Yu to adapt the novel into a movie. Ronny Yu was not good at or interested in costume drama, and reluctantly read the novel, so the two went to seek Liang Yusheng's opinion: if he authorized a complete adaptation, he would start work; readily agreed. After the script was finalized, investors were still needed, so Huang Baiming, the owner of Oriental Film Company, served as the film's investor.
As for the male lead, director Ronny Yu locked in Leslie Cheung to play Zhuo Yihang. The original candidate for the heroine was Michelle Yeoh. Because she wanted to be a martial arts type, a lot of martial arts scenes were written for her in the script; So I wanted to find Lin Qingxia, but Lin Qingxia's schedule was also very full.
