Director Michel Hazanavicius has wanted to make a silent film for many years, because he admires many filmmakers in the silent film era and the natural nature of those pictures. At first, he did not seriously make up his mind to make silent films. Later, with the success of his spy filmsandat the box office, he began to seriously prepare for his hobby. The protagonist of the film has cooperated with the director many times, and the heroine has not only cooperated with the director, but also the director's wife. He set the story as a more exaggerated plot, because he believes that most of the silent film era movies are more exaggerated. He also specialized in Hollywood and filming techniques in the 1920s. The script took four months to complete.
The production companies are La Petite Reine and ARP Sélection, and are also funded by Studio 37, France 3 Cinéma, Canal+ and Ciné Cinéma, with a total cost of 13.47 million euros. The entire crew consists of French and American personnel.
A total of seven weeks of shooting in Los Angeles. When the actors are performing, the director is responsible for playing classical music before Hollywood.
