The protagonist Noah is a good husband, a good father, and teaches in a high school in New York. His life is easy and comfortable-work is not too tiring, four children don't need him to worry too much, and his wife is very considerate. He often goes to Long Island in summer to conceive a new novel he is writing. When he ran into Allison, a beautiful woman, he suddenly felt that he had found a "spiritual partner" with similar temperaments. Noah's wife Helen, they fell in love since college, and have been married for 17 years. She was very disappointed when she learned of her husband's adultery, and her attitude gradually changed from understanding to anger, from forgiveness to revenge. Allison works as a waiter in a popular Hampton restaurant. A tragic event occurred, and she has not recovered yet.
