The protagonist Noah is a good husband, a good father, and teaches in a high school in New York. His life is easy and comfortable-work is not too tiring, four children don't need him to worry too much, and his wife is very considerate. He often goes to Long Island in summer to conceive a new novel he is writing. When he ran into Allison, a beautiful woman, he suddenly felt that he had found a "spiritual partner" with similar temperaments. Noah's wife Helen, they fell in love since college, and have been married for 17 years.
