During World War II, during the Allied bombing of Berlin, the film’s negatives were lost and damaged. It was not until 1954 that the black and white version of the film was discovered at the British Film Academy . Soon after, the film coloring manual written by Charlotte Reiniger in 1925 was discovered, and the film restoration work officially began. When the restoration was completed in 1970, the film was shortened from 90 minutes to 65 minutes due to the 24 frames per second, and many background details could not be restored.
