Before the filming started, director James Cameron got in touch with Orson Scott Card and asked him to write a book for making a movie. Card first told his agent that he was unwilling to fictionalize his work, and when he learned that the director was James Cameron, he agreed to consider it. Card received a letter of guarantee from Cameron to ensure that he could conceive the novel according to his wishes, and Card immediately signed a paper contract. After the first meeting with Cameron, Card quickly wrote the first three chapters, mainly the story of the first part of the film between Bud and Lindesa Brigman. Cameron handed these three chapters to Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, who are about to take on these two roles.
Filming of the film started on August 18, 1988, and the filming plan was completed in January 1989. A high budget of 69.5 million U.S. dollars. "Abyss" is to some extent a director's autobiography. When writing the movie script for this film, Cameron was in emotional crisis with his second wife, filmmaker Gower Anne Hurd, so he brought his own experience into the creation, naturally bringing the hero and heroine The emotional entanglement is deeply touching. The heroes and heroines in the film are like Cameron and Hurd. They met at work, got together and then broke up because of working together and marital problems.
