The script of the film was jointly completed by Lawrence Kasdan and Lucas, and it was not until the filming plan and budget were finalized that the actual writing began. At that time, the art department of the crew had begun to design work based on Lucas's story outline. Lucas, Kasdan, Marqund and producer Howard G. Kazankin spent two weeks discussing the concept of the script, and Kasdan then constructed a formal script based on the recording of the conversation.
