George Lucas started writing the Trilogy of Star Wars Prequel on November 1, 1994. The script was adapted from the synopsis he completed in 1976. This only 15-page synopsis was originally Lucas as a retrospective. Designed for the background and events of the characters in the Star Wars trilogy. The film was originally titled "The Beginning", but Lucas later changed it to "The Phantom Menace", alluding to Senator Palpatine's long hidden ambition to become emperor.
While Lucas started the script, art director Gavin Barquette also began to design thousands of props and sets in the film, and the whole process took two years. In order to give the Jedi Knights a new style of action, the producer hired senior stuntman Nick Gillard as the stunt coordinator. In Gillard’s view, the battle scene using lightsabers should be like chess. Step by step, due to the limited length of the lightsaber, the Jedi will surely integrate all the styles of swordsmanship, including the various schools of Japanese swordsmanship. When training Liam Neeson and Iwan McGregor, each action scene conceived by Gillard consists of 5 or 6 segments, and each segment is 60 seconds long.
The film was filmed on June 26, 1997 and finished on September 30 of the same year. In addition to setting up the main set at the Leavesden Film Studios in the United Kingdom, the film crew was also in the desert of Tunisia and the Caserta Palace in Italy. The scenes of Tatuni Star and the interior of Naboo Palace were respectively shot in. On the third night in the desert outside Stozeur, Tunisia, a sudden sandstorm destroyed many sets and props. In order to repair them as soon as possible, the crew revised the plan and the filming of the film in Tunisia was completed as scheduled.
