The story takes place in Oakland in a parallel world. Cassius Green, a down-and-out black young man with strong self-esteemlives in his uncle's garage and owes four months of rent. He got a job as a telemarketer in the "HaoShi" call center. Asked by colleagues, Cassius found a shortcut to improve performance, that is, disguising his voice like a white man in order to improve the effect of sales. Colleagues were dissatisfied with the bad work pay and launched a strike. Cassius initially expressed solidarity, but he did not intend to give up the coveted opportunity for promotion. After being promoted, he crossed the strike warning line.
