During the Warring States Period in Japan, a mountain village full of desolate mountains and rivers was attacked by robbers every year when the wheat was harvested. This year, the villagers decided to hire seven samurai to defend their village and harvest. The seven samurai were Kanbei, Kuzo, Katsushiro, Goro, Shichiro, Heihachi, and Kikuchiyo, a farmer posing as a samurai. The samurai Kanbingbei is a man with strong pace and rich combat experience. He is responsible for commanding the entire village to prepare for defense. During the raid on the robber’s nest, the samurai Kuzo and Kikuchiyo killed several robbers, but the samurai Heihachi was shot and killed to save the farmer Riki. The samurai and the villagers held shovel and bamboo spear in their hands and guarded the village, cleverly repelling the robber's attacks, but in the resistance Nakakayama Gorobei died in battle. On the day of the decisive battle, 13 robbers rushed into the village on horseback. In the fight, the robbers hit Jiuzang with firecrackers. Kikuchiyo killed the last enemy with anger and hatred, and fell to the ground due to a shot. The robbers were finally wiped out, but the villagers also paid a great price. The seven samurai finally killed four, leaving four samurai swords on the grave to pierce the sky. After the war, the samurai left the village, and the leader of the samurai Kanbei could not help but sigh: "This is also a defeat. It is not the samurai who won, but the farmers."

Seven Samurai quotes

  • [on taking Katsushiro as a student]

Kambei Shimada: You embarrass me. You're overestimating me. Listen, I'm not a man with any special skill, but I've had plenty of experience in battles; losing battles, all of them. In short, that's all I am. Drop such an idea for your own good.

Katsushiro: No Sir, my decision has been made. I'll follow you sir.

Kambei Shimada: I forbid it. I can't afford to take a kid with me.

  • [Kambei is considering the farmer's offer]

    Kambei Shimada: It's impossible.

Katsushiro: Sir! Why not arm them with...?

Kambei Shimada: I thought of that, too.

    Katsushiro: But sir.

Kambei Shimada: [pointedly] This would not be a game. A band of forty bandits! Two or three "samurai" could accomplish nothing. Defense is harder than offense. Mountains in the back of the village?

    Rikichi: Yes!

Kambei Shimada: Can horses get over them?

    Rikichi: Yes!

Kambei Shimada: Fields in front. The village is wide open to horsemen... until the fields are flooded. One guard for each direction takes four. Two more as a reserve. You'll need at least... seven, including me.
