Rudy grew up in an ordinary family and was the smallest of his brothers. The men in the family, including their father, are extremely enthusiastic about rugby games. They are loyal fans of the University of Notre Dame team, and they are always broadcast on TV. Rudy is no exception, but when he announced to the whole family that he was determined to play in the University of Notre Dame team, the whole family disagreed. After graduation, he, like his brother Frank, worked in a steel factory where his family worked. On his 22nd birthday, Rudy's friend gave him a coat with the words University of Notre Dame and encouraged him to realize his dream. He was deeply moved. However, the accidental death of a friend in a steel plant caused Rudy to be hit hard. For the sake of his friend and his own dream, he left his girlfriend who was already talking about marriage and resolutely embarked on the train to the University of Notre Dame.
With the help of a priest, Rudy used his savings to go to a Holy Cross College near the University of Notre Dame, and hoped to transfer to the University of Notre Dame with excellent grades. At the same time, he got a job in the University of Notre Dame football team at any cost. Because there was no money to stay, Rudy secretly lived in the utility room and got help from a black man who hired him.

After the first academic year, he had B except for an A, but such grades were not enough for him to enter his ideal university until the fourth year.
