This film is the first script written by Kelly Fremont, and many of the stories in it are from Fremont's own personal feelings. When writing the screenplay, Fremont did not think too much about the economic trauma that American society was suffering, but because he felt that thousands of freshly graduated college students continued to face the same predicament as Leiden in the film.
After several turns of the script, it fell into the hands of producer Ali Bell, who passed the script to Ivan Reitman. Both showed great interest in the script.
