In order to accurately portray the characters, director Ed Harris searched and read all the literature about Pollock that could be found, went to galleries and museums to observe Pollock’s works, and changed his smoking habits, only smoking Pollock’s past hobbies without filters. "Camel" brand cigarettes. He also made a special trip to pay a visit to the painter's former residence, and lay on the bed where Pollock once lay to experience the painter's chaotic thoughts. In order to truly show the image of Pollock before his death, Harris also deliberately gained weight. And most importantly, in order to reproduce the true face of a talented painter on the screen, Harris spent about ten years learning Pollock's painting techniques from 1991. In the film, he personally fully demonstrated Pollock’s strong personal style of dripping action painting. This kind of ritual painting method is full of hypnotic religiousness, and the visual style is frantic and energetic. Harris shot these images from an unusual angle and made them full of exciting effects through quick editing   .

Compared with a detailed study of life and deeds, the film focuses more on depicting the protagonist’s creative emotions and inner world. 1. Pollock has pursued purer expression all his life. He has used painting more than once to express his pain/confusion, and unreservedly release his feelings/emotions in the limited freeze frame. 2. What is the meaning of modern art? When should the creation stop? His life is like his work, which ends when he thinks it should be over.

Pollock quotes

  • Lee Krasner: You're not just randomly putting paint on the canvas, you're painting *something*. You can't abstract from nothing, you can only abstract from life, from nature.

    Jackson Pollock: I *am* nature.

  • Sande Pollock: [quoting from William Blake] There is a smile of smiles in which these two smiles meet.
