All the characters in the film including friends and enemies, wives and mistresses, living blacks and dead whites all communicated in the church service. This is a very visual scene, but it is too much for the whole film. Too strong, unable to support such an ending. Because such a scene does not have an accurate narrative to guide it. The story takes place in a farm, not in a town. Although the last scene tries to connect them together, the audience cannot sum up the things in common.
Director Robert Douglas Benton hinted most of the time in this film that he intends to make a noble and exciting American sand table based on Ford or Victor, but the products he delivered are completely synthetic. The story was just pieced together rudely by the director. In this touching film, director Robert Douglas Benton effectively reproduces the Texas scene during the Great Depression.
