Pacific Rim Filming process

"Pacific Rim" officially started shooting in Toronto, Canada, on November 14, 2011, and ended in April 2012. The director himself mentioned the progress of the film to the media at the end of the second week of filming. During the filming process, the codename of the film was called "Silent Seas" and "Still Seas".
Before the film, Gilmore Del Toro had never finished filming a movie within 115 days, but the filming cycle of "Pacific Rim" was only 103 days. In order to achieve this goal, Del Toro drafted a separate unit so that he could start work every day earlier than the main unit, as well as make it on his rest days. During these 103 days, Gilmore Del Toro worked 17-18 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, he also adopted a new method to direct the performance of the actors. He allowed the actors to have "failure" actions and improvisations; however, the whole film was shot under the firm control of Del Toro. He said that all Things, 100% have to pass through him sooner or later. He controls everything. Some people like this, some people don't, but in order to complete the film, this is the only way.
"Pacific Rim" was shot with Red One digital camera from Red Digital Cinema Camera. At the beginning, Gilmore Del Toro did not intend to make the film into a 3D movie. He believed that the huge size of the mecha and monsters in the movie would not bring good effects to 3D. However, it was later announced that the film would provide a 3D version through conversion, and the conversion cycle exceeded 40 weeks. Gilmore del Toro cut the original footage about an hour from the film.

Pacific Rim quotes

  • Raleigh Becket: This is worth fighting for. We don't have to just obey him.

Mako Mori: It's not obedience, Mr. Becket; it's respect.

  • [first lines]

Raleigh Becket: [narrating] When I was a kid, whenever I'd feel small or lonely, I'd look up at the stars. Wondered if there was life up there. Turns out I was looking in the wrong direction. When alien life entered our world, it was from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. A fissure between two tectonic plates. A portal between dimensions. The Breach. I was fifteen when the first Kaiju made land in San Francisco.

    [pause]

Raleigh Becket: By the time tanks, jets and missiles took it down, six days and 35 miles later, three cities were destroyed. Tens of thousands of lives were lost. We mourned our dead, memorialized the attack, and moved on. And then, only six months later, the second attack hit Manila.

Newscaster: [on TV] The acid factor of the Kaiju blood creates a toxic phenomenon known as Kaiju Blue

Raleigh Becket: Then the third one hit Cabo. And then the fourth. And then we learned this was not gonna stop. This was just the beginning. We needed a new weapon. The world came together, pooling it's resources and throwing aside old rivalries for the sake of the greater good. To fight monsters, we created monsters of our own. The Jaeger program was born.
