Margaretgrew up in the idyllic southern United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Because her father quit her job, Margaret moved with her family to the unfamiliar northern town of Milton. Unlike the warmth and comfort of the South, Milton during the Industrial Revolution was cold and dirty. The fragrance of flowers and plants is no longer on the road, replaced by rude workers and textile workshops with fluttering cotton wool. The domineering young industrialist John Thorntonis the owner of a textile mill and his harsh attitude towards workers makes a terrible first impression on Margaret. After living in Milton for a period of time, Margaret gradually realized that behind the rough temper of the workers was the kindness of nature and the suffering of life. Thornton fell in love with Margaret at first sight, but he seemed to be pushing Margaret further and further away. Like North & South, the two are diametrically opposed but closely linked
