The Shimabara family living in the Izu countryside lives a peaceful and serene life, but the surface warmth cannot hide the tension and disagreement among the members. The 17-year-old eldest daughter, Noriko (ふきいしかづえ), is reluctant to stay in the countryside and instead goes to the metropolis of Tokyo to develop, and for this reason, his relationship with his father Tetsuzo ( Ken Mitsuishi ) is particularly strained. On a website called "Ruins", Noriko met a netizen named Kumiko (played by つぐみ), and finally she chose to run away from home. Noriko's departure causes the family to fall apart, and soon her younger sister Yuka ( Yoshitaka Yuriko ) also heads to Tokyo. Their mother could not bear to commit suicide, and Tetsuzo set out to find his daughter in order to save the family. In 2002, 54 female high school students who met on the "ruins" jumped hand in hand to the speeding train.
