Does this span of time and space mean that the art of future generations is a reflection of history? As Nazi-era painters gained recognition by painting blurry photos (related to Nazi history)? But the basic point is clear (though not necessarily true) that the film aims to point out that artistic creation is not a sudden inspiration, but is held back by history, it is spoken by history. So does such a theme need to be expressed through melodrama with so many coincidences? I see some good reviews praising this film because it adds a new means of reflection (or alternative expression) to the classic melodrama. But I feel that it is the fact that the alternative expression is embedded in this melodramatic framework that makes the movie so-so.

Günther Preusser: If he likes your art, you'll get a gallery. Then you can buy your girlfriend a car.
Kurt Barnert: I'm married.
Günther Preusser: Then you can buy your wife and your girlfriend a car.
Kurt Barnert: I just don't know if what I'm doing is good enough.
Günther Preusser: Somehow it isn't. But it's all subjective anyway. And if it weren't subjective, it'd be craft.

Kurt Barnert: You smoke?
Professor Carl Seeband: Sixty-three is the right age to start. The consequences will hardly catch up with me.
