The film was inspired by photos of Asian prisoners in the German army captured by Allied photographers after World War II. The more famous one is the captured photos of Yang Jiangyong. The story background of the film, from North Korea in the late 1920s, to the Mongolian battlefield in the late 1930s, and the Normandy battlefield in the 1940s, almost spanned before and after World War II. In historical facts, there are indeed a small number of Asian soldiers, including pure Japanese soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army, Japanese Korean soldiers and National Government soldiers from China. They have survived many captures. These wars include The Soviet-Japanese border war, the Sino-Japanese battlefield, the Soviet-German war, the battle of Normandy. Based on this historical fact, the film depicts the story of two Japanese-Korean and Japanese soldiers fighting for survival in this era.
