In 1914, when World War I ignited, Jack, the son of Joseph Rudyard Kipling, Britain's first Nobel Prize winner for literature, wanted to join the army and serve his country. However, Jack was repeatedly rejected by the military because he was severely short-sighted and could not pass the medical examination. It was an honor to be able to join the army at that time.
Rudyard was an avid supporter of the war, and through his influence, he eventually succeeded in getting Jack into the army. But Rudyard's wife does not support sending her son, who is too short-sighted and should not join the army, to the battlefield. Jack, who was only 17 years old, quickly became an officer through his own efforts and led his team to the battlefield. However, there was a huge disparity in strength with the German army, and soon came the bad news of Jack's disappearance in the battle. At that time, Jack had just passed his 18th birthday. Although the Kiplings searched hard, it was only hopeless pain in the end   .

Reminds me of the Korean War, and what happened to Chinese fighters is similar. It also reminds me of parents who lost their children studying abroad

My Boy Jack quotes

  • Caroline Kipling: [crying] I miss him.

Rudyard Kipling: [bursts into tears] So do I.

Caroline Kipling: I can feel his head on my chest. I can feel his thick hair under my fingers. I can hear him laugh. I can feel his heat against me.

  • [last lines]

Rudyard Kipling: Have you news of my boy Jack?/ Not this tide./ When d'you think that he'll come back?/ Not with this wind blowing, and this tide./ Has any one else had word of him?/ Not this tide./ For what is sunk will hardly swim, Not with this wind blowing, and this tide./ Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?/ None this tide,/ Nor any tide,/ Except he did not shame his kind-/ Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide./ Then hold your head up all the more,/ This tide,/ And every tide;/ Because he was the son you bore,/ And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!
