In order to find suitable candidates who can speak English and match the temperament of Mulan, Disney held a global audition and openly solicited leading actors. The film’s casting director team visited five continents and auditioned nearly a thousand actors in order to find suitable actors for the role. The requirements for this role include reliable martial arts skills, speaking English, and most importantly, being a star. Until November 30, 2017, Disney officially announced that it had ended the global audition and officially announced that Liu Yifei will star in the heroine Hua Mulan.
During the audition, the film crew needed Liu Yifei to try four scenes, one of which was a five-page dialogue, and she was required to complete all of them in English. The audition took two hours, and then director Nikki Carlo asked Liu Yifei to conduct a one-and-a-half hour physical training. In the process of training, director Nikki Caro saw that Liu Yifei was exhausted, but Liu Yifei did not request a rest. Instead, she was very focused, dedicated, and maintained an excellent state.
