The script of "Motherless Brooklyn" is adapted from a novel by Jonathan Lutham. The director Edward Harrison Norton adjusted the time frame from the setting in the 1990s to the 1950s. The director is intoxicated by this era-the shiny Chevrolet on the street Cars, felt hats and double-breasted suits make the movie visually pleasing. But two hours and 24 minutes, the movie time is really too long, it might be better if professional editors make it more compact, which will eventually make the audience more satisfied. The plot of the movie is also, sometimes too complicated, and there are several heavy dialogues interspersed in it. I feel that the purpose of their existence is to try to make sure that the audience understands what is going on. But the director's hard work does not seem to be exactly as hoped, but in any case at least there is something to be admired.
Compared with the film "Chinatown", which directly inspired California's water war, the core of "Motherless Brooklyn" is not just money. The hidden part of New York's infrastructure choices constitutes a dense and long-speaking history lesson, and the audience needs time to digest it.
"Motherless Brooklyn", regardless of its flaws, is an important and distinctive film, unlike any other work currently in theaters. Obviously it is not the detective suspense film of yesteryear.
