The 55-acre surface of Mars in the film was built on the Fraser Dunes in the south of Vancouver and is one of the largest sets in film history. In addition to carving sand dunes, the art department also covered a large amount of cement on the ground and sprayed 120,000 gallons of red environmentally friendly latex paint with fire hoses.
In order to create a dust storm on Mars, the special effects department of the film produced 10 fans equipped with V8 engines with a maximum output of 350 horsepower.
To participate in the filming of the film, NASA ( National Aeronautics and Space Administration ) and the producer signed the "Space Operations Agreement", and the two sides have been working closely for a year since then.
The spacesuit in the film weighs 62 pounds. At the beginning of filming, it took 50 minutes for the actors to put on this spacesuit. Later, after technical improvements, this process was reduced to 20 minutes. In order to keep the actors breathing smooth and prevent frost on the mask, the backpack of the spacesuit is equipped with a cooling system to provide fresh air to the helmet.
