Meek's Cutoff is a road movie and an American Western. As the three families trek across the Oregon Trail, the majestic, barren, and terrifying natural environment of the American West comes into view on camera. Director Kelly Reichardt uses his own visual language to make a certain political appeal, which does not appear rigid and deliberate in the film, but a natural fit.
"Meek's Cutoff" is Kelly Reichardt's break from the traditional Western style, facing the tried and tested Western, this is undoubtedly an extraordinary attempt.
