The background of the story is that during World War II, eight Italian soldiers with a mule were ordered to garrison a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The local area is like a paradise isolated from the world, and the residents of the town cannot feel the atmosphere of war at all. Before long, the army also forgot their mission, mingling with the townspeople, playing football games as a pastime, painting murals for the village church, or chasing love.
